How to beat the post-holiday blues

By 21st August 2015 No Comments
So you’ve just been on the holiday of a lifetime – cocktail in hand, the sound of waves caressing the beach, being able to spend all day reading. But now you’re back at your desk with a computer to look at rather than rolling hills. Sound familiar?

Coming back from your summer break can leave your morale low and your nostalgia high. In fact, a new report has found 40% of men and 53% of women suffer from the post-holiday blues upon returning to work. It’s not surprising that so many people are left feeling a bit deflated after a holiday. However, the good news is that it doesn’t have to happen.

We’ve put together some of our suggestions to help you battle the blues once and for all!

Book a break closer to home

The cause of your sadness is rooted in the fact that you’re pining for some more downtime, so it makes sense to pack up and go away again, right? We’re not talking about grabbing your passport and going on a long-haul flight to New York – for one thing that could be a bit of a stretch for your funds and lack of holiday allowance left at work.

What we’re talking about is having a mini getaway. Book into a hotel in Chichester for a night or two and you can do all the things you loved on holiday without having to take any more time off work. Placing yourself into new surroundings, exploring new places and lying in bed for as long as you want are some of the simple joys of getting away. It doesn’t have to be a different country for you to have another break!

If your idea of a holiday is sightseeing, then visit somewhere like Chichester. You can see what there is to offer there and easily commute into London to see some of the greatest places on Earth. It’ll work out a lot cheaper than booking a holiday on another continent, that’s for sure!

Trying to spread out your holidays with lots of little mini breaks will help combat the post-holiday blues in future as you’ve always got something else to look forward to.

Settle back in properly

After you return from your break, make sure you have a little bit of time to yourself to settle back in. If you get back from the airport at midnight and you’re starting work at 8am the next day, you’re going to feel rushed and it will be a bit of a shock.

Instead, take an extra day after your journey home to readjust to your surroundings. You can spend this time washing the clothes you wore while away, unpacking your suitcase, as well as allowing for a bit more downtime. By slowly introducing yourself into your usual routine you will feel a lot happier about going back to work.

Eat better

On holiday you probably went one of two ways – over-indulged or ate better than usual. Either way, you should try and introduce more fresh-food and healthy options into your daily routine. It’s the easiest way to make yourself feel better after your holiday.

Also make sure you drink plenty of water. More or less everything you do on holiday can cause you to dehydrate – flying, eating salty food, drinking alcohol. One of the best ways to make yourself feel on top of the world again is to make sure your body is in tip-top shape!

Realise your vacation doesn’t have to end there

You will always have the memories of your getaway, so don’t try and forget all about it.

Try and make an event out of remembering all the fun you had so your happiness levels stay high. Instead of just uploading your snaps to Facebook, why not set up an album on a projector for you and the other jetsetters to look through. It will give you all a chance to reminisce together and talk about how much fun you had!

Continue with holiday rituals

Everything you do on holiday you do because you enjoy, so try and incorporate them into your schedule. Whether it’s reading or swimming, try and do them at home and you’ll feel more positive throughout the year.

Avoid the daily grind

Try and do one new thing each day. It could be anything from taking a different route to work (as long as you don’t end up late), sampling a new flavour of crisps or listening to a new musician. You’ll be surprised how much satisfaction you get from being able to speak to people about something new you’ve done.
